André Carvalho (bass)

Born in Lisbon in 1981, André Carvalho studied classical music at the Academia de Amadores de Música with Prof. Fernando Flores (Double bass and Chamber Music) and with Prof. Eurico Carrapatoso (Composition). At the same time he studied Jazz at the Hot Clube de Portugal Jazz school with, among others, Bernardo Moreira, Pedro Moreira, André Fernandes, Bruno Santos, João Moreira, Ricardo Pinheiro, Afonso Pais and Filipe Melo.
In 2004 he graduaded from the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa with a degree in Computer Engineering.
Since then, he also participated in workshops and masterclasses: III Doublebass Festival Ludwig Streicher in Santiago de Compostela; International Summer Academy in Austria with Prof. Josef Niederhammer; IASJ in Siena where he represented Hot Clube de Portugal; Lisbon Jazz Summer School with Danilo Perez, Ben Street, Adam Cruz, Rogério Boccato and Rudresh Mahanthappa; Matt Pavolka, Ben Monder, Pete Rende, Carlos Barretto, Nuno Ferreira, André Fernandes, Joe Sanders among others.
He also played in a few classical orchestras: Orquestra Juvenil Ibero-Americana with Gustavo Dudamel, Orquestra Sinfónica Académica Metropolitana with Michael Zilm; Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil with Christopher Bochman.
André Carvalho also had the opportunity to play with musicians like Mário Laginha, Maria João, Mário Delgado, Clays Nymark, Big Band do Hot Clube de Portugal, Bruno Santos, Filipe Melo, Júlio Resende, Cristina Branco, Bruno Pedroso, André Sousa Machado, Rui Caetano, Paula Sousa, Tomás Pimentel, Jorge Reis, Afonso Pais, Lars Arens, Gonçalo Marques, among others.
In 2008, representing the Hot Clube de Portugal and the Academia de Amadores de Música he won a “Recognition Prize” in Festa do Jazz in S. Luiz Theater (Lisbon).
Since 2007 he plays in the European Movement Jazz Orchestra, an orchestra with young Portuguese, Slovenian and German musicians. With this orchestra he has played in Germany, Belgium, Slovenia, Portugal, Croatia, Egypt and Austria. European Movement Jazz Orchestra has recently recorded a live CD that is coming out by “Clean Feed Records” in 2011.
Nowadays, he is studying in Vienna at the Universität für Musik un darstellende Kunst Wien with Prof. Josef Niederhammer and he has just recorded his own original music with his 5tet which is going to be released in the beginning of 2011.
